The cluster-gear assembly rotates any time the clutch is engaged to a running engine, whether or not the transmission is in gear or in neutral. there are two basic types of manual transmissions.. The neutral safety switch is located under the clutch on all vehicles that have manual transmissions. the are designed to prevent the car from being started while still in gear.. Manual transmission: is there any harm done by slowing down in neutral to a stop? why do cars with manual transmissions consume fuel more efficiently than cars with automatic transmissions? does coasting downhill with a manual transmission in neutral use the same amount of fuel as coasting in 1st or 2nd gear?. I have a 1997 honda civic 5-speed with about 200,000 miles. it is making a low-pitched whining noise when i let the clutch out in neutral. i took it to a mechanic who immediately diagnosed it as the throwout bearing.. Slipping gears: your transmission is supposed to stay in one gear until you shift (with a manual transmission) or the computer does it for you (with an automatic transmission). if the transmission is slipping in or out of gear without any effort on your part in a manual, or sliding into neutral in an automatic, you need to get to a mechanic.
