The powertrain is placed in back, and 12v battery for ancillaries can be powered through plug and gets some charge from brake recuperation.

Volkswagen Reports that the XL1 can run up to 31 miles in pure electric mode. This Volkswagen XL1’s fuel tank holds 2.64 US gallons of diesel. The diesel hybrid powertrain produces 68 HP and 103 LB-FT of torque, its excellent for a 0 to 60 run in 12.5 seconds. The main thing, this XL1 has no suspension.
