2012 Mercedes Benz SLK 350 Review Page 1

By David Colman

The Carreview Window Sticker
Specs: $67k price, 302 HP, 19/26 Mileage and 0-60 in 5.5 seconds
Pros:
  • The best SLK styling in years
  • Slingshot Acceleration and excellent handling
  • Custom Tailoring
  • Slick Roof with on-the-fly adjustable tint
  • A roadster that appeals to many of the buyer’s instincts
Cons:
  • Lack of Storage
  • No Manual Tranny
  • Steep price of $67k
The Review:
The SLK is the closest thing Mercedes makes to a sports car. It is small, nimble and fast, seats only two, and functions as a convertible or a closed coupe. The SLK is a stunning piece of design. You can learn more about a car’s true mettle if you wash and dry its metal. In the process of cleaning the SLK for a photo shoot, I marveled at the complexity of its shape. This roadster has more flutes than a champagne glass. In fact, you can hardly find a single flat plane on the entire body. The bodywork looks muscular and buffed, with short overhangs fore and aft, and bulging fenders to accommodate the beefy tires and AMG alloys. 7.5 inch front rims carry 225/40ZR18 Pirelli P Zero rubber, with 8.5 inch back rims equipped with 245/35ZR18 Pirellis. The simple AMG 5-spoke rims are part of a $2,500 Sport Package that includes appealing “Sport Body Styling” plus haunting interior illumination in “SOLAR red.”
What prevents the SLK from full sports car status is lack of manual transmission availability. Like so many other manufacturers, Mercedes sees no point in Federalizing a separate (manual) gearbox for a customer take rate of 5 or 10 percent. Still, those are the very customers who will buy an Audi TTS or Porsche 911 expressly because those companies offer them the choice to shift gears by depressing a cutch pedal. Not that the SLK’s 7-speed automatic is a bad piece of engineering. To the contrary, it offers the driver Efficiency, Sport and Manual modes, while providing small steering wheel-mounted paddles to control up and down changes. Even so, the SLK is less driver-involving than it could be with a slick stick shift.

Packaging is tight in this baby Benz, Pretty much anything you carry on an outing will need to store in the compact trunk because there’s almost no ancillary storage in the cockpit, save two small door pockets, a lockable cubby between the seats, and the glovebox. There is absolutely no storage behind the seats. If you chose to retract the nifty folding hardtop, available trunk space becomes even more circumscribed. Use of the folding hardtop restricts you to a small central bin in the trunk, fitted with a latchable lid. Weekend outings for 2 will require backpack-size take-alongs.

2013 Mercedes Benz G63 AMG

2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG - Front Angle

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG fuel consumption of 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) is a reduction of 2.1 litres on the predecessor model, representing fuel savings of 13 percent. This reduction can be attributed to the state-of-the-art biturbo eight-cylinder engine, along with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission system, the generator management system and the ECO start/stop function. The seven-speed automatic gearbox features three drive modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, creating an incredible range of variability. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode, the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stationary. “C” mode is also characterised by smooth accelerator and transmission characteristics and early gear changes; the vehicle is usually started in second gear in this mode. The AMG instrument cluster includes a green “ECO” symbol, indicating when the ECO start/stop function is on.

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG runs on new AMG 5×2 spoke light alloy wheels as standard equipment. The 9.5 x 20 titanium-grey-painted wheels with high-sheen finish are fitted with 275/50 R 20 tyres. As an exclusive special equipment option, the vehicle can be fitted with matt-black-painted AMG light alloy wheels with high-sheen rim flanges. The new AMG high-performance brakes deliver top performance in terms of deceleration, adjustable feed and endurance. All-round ventilated, perforated brake discs with dimensions of 375 x 36 millimetres at the front and 330 x 20 millimetres at the rear provide optimum thermal capability and outstanding deceleration values. The front axle is fitted with a six-piston fixed-calliper brake system taken from the ML63 AMG, with a single-piston floating-calliper system on the rear axle. The brake callipers are painted red around the entire circumference, and are also available in silver.

With maximum output of 450 kW (612 hp) and maximum torque of 1000 newton metres, the top-of-the-range V12 model delights the connoisseur with its incomparably dynamic handling characteristics. The G65 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds, and has a top speed of 230 km/h (electronically limited). This is the first G-Class vehicle to be equipped with the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine, which features new exhaust turbochargers with increased spiral cross-section, flow-optimised wastegate channels, multi-spark ignition with twelve double-ignition coils and a higher-power engine control unit. The result is enhanced combustion, leading to smoother running and power delivery. The high-quality carbon and aluminium engine cover adds a final visual touch to this extensive package of new features. As in the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G?TRONIC automatic transmissionsystem is responsible for power transmission to all four wheels.

In terms of appearance, the G65 AMG is differentiated from its V8 sister model by the high-gloss chrome radiator grille, the 9.5 x 20 AMG five-spoke light alloy wheels, painted titanium grey with high-sheen finish, its 275/50 R 20 tyres and the V12 BITURBO logo on the mudguards. Interior features include the welcome display with exclusive AMG V12 BITURBO animation, the designo leather exclusive upholstery and the leather instrument panel trim. A unique special touch is the distinctively V12 diamond design of the seats, including the impressed AMG medallion on the headrests. This distinctive upholstery feature is repeated on the door central panels. A comprehensive range of standard equipment includes black piano lacquer designo trim features and designo foot mats with a V12 badge. An exclusive special option from the AMG Performance Studio is AMG light alloy wheels, painted matt black with high-sheen rim flanges.

The interior features even more innovations in comparison with the predecessor model. Along with the facelift changes provided as standard, including the new instrument panel and state-of-the-art infotainment and assist systems, the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG has an AMG instrument cluster with colour TFT screen, AMG main menu and separate gear display, plus white-lit AMG sills on all doors. The classy E-SELECT shift lever with the distinctive AMG medallion is a familiar feature from other models such as the SLS AMG. An exclusive on-board environment is created by the designo leather upholstery with ruffled leather door panelling. Options available for an even more stylish interior comprise the AMG carbon trim and the designo Exclusive package.

2015 Mercedes Benz E400 Cabriolet

2015 Mercedes-Benz E400 Cabriolet

2015 Mercedes-Benz E400 Cabriolet

A great turbo engine in a sweet convertible.

Like its fixed-roof sister model, the Mercedes-Benz E-class cabriolet has been extensively restyled and updated for 2014. The changes are marked by upgraded driver-assistance systems and significantly altered styling: new headlights in a single housing, new taillights, a new grille, and new front and rear fascias. Unlike the 2014 E-class sedan andwagon, the two-door models keep their muscular rear haunches, an element that works better here than on the larger models. And for 2014, the E350 coupe and cabriolet use a carry-over naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6.
Now allow us to jump ahead to 2015, which will see the introduction of a twin-turbocharged V-6. Despite its 3.0-liter displacement, cars carrying the engine will be called E400—and if Mercedes’ badges don’t make sense, at least this engine actually makes more power than what’s under the hood of the E350. Although U.S.-market numbers are not yet finalized, we expect the blown six to produce 328 horsepower at 5500 rpm, up from the E350’s 302 horsepower at 6500 rpm. The torque difference is even more significant. Whereas the E350 produces 273 lb-ft at 3500 rpm, the E400 will make a far more substantial 354 lb-ft at 1400 rpm.
Mercedes is delaying the U.S. introduction of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter E400 to 2015 in order to feed the first cars to the red-hot Chinese market, where a 3.0-liter engine is incredibly important for tax reasons. And the simultaneous European launch is manageable, as Europeans prefer fuel-sipping four-cylinder engines and diesels.
We were able to drive the 2015 E400 cabriolet more than a year before its market launch and walked away impressed with the new engine’s character and capabilities. It emits a throaty sound on startup but is never intrusive, and power delivery is smooth and linear. Its estimated 0-to-60-mph time of 5.3 seconds is quick enough, being more than a full second fleeter than the E350 cabriolet’s. Top speed is governed at an easily attained 130 mph. Fuel consumption is rated at 31 mpg in the optimistic European cycle; real-life and EPA figures will be somewhat lower.
Similar to the pieces on other E-class models, the E400 cabriolet’s brakes and steering are uninvolving, but when not pushed to the limit—and these cruisers rarely are—the chassis is utterly pleasant and compliant. To help the car stay on the road, Mercedes has upgraded its many driver-assistance programs. Standard nanny systems include Attention Assist, which monitors the driver for signs of fatigue, and a collision-prevention system. Optional fare includes active cruise control that can make minor steering-wheel corrections as necessary, a lane-keeping monitor, cross-traffic alert, and precrash systems that prepare vehicle mechanisms in the event of an imminent rear collision or pedestrian impact.
Mercedes-Benz fits the E-class cabriolet with an electrically powered fabric top, not a folding hardtop. With its thick sound insulation, it reduces wind noise down to nearly coupe levels. Also, a spoiler rises from the windshield frame when the top is down, further reducing turbulence and the wind rush noise that would otherwise accompany it. The fabric is so tough it is said to be almost impossible to cut through it with a knife. When retracted, the softtop uses up far less trunk space than a folding hardtop would, leaving more room for luggage and such.
Competition for the Mercedes-Benz E400 cabriolet is thin; it includes the heavyweight Audi S5 cabriolet, the upcoming BMW 4-series convertible, and the relatively unsophisticated Infiniti G37 convertible (which adopts the Q60 badge for 2014). Elsewhere, the Lexus IS convertible is being phased out, and the Cadillac ATS convertible has been sacked at the behest of GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson and his lofty profitability targets.
The E-class cabriolet has a lot going for it, including composure, style, and quality. If a V-6 is what you want, we advise that you wait for the 2015 E400, which has the far-more-responsive twin-turbo engine going for it compared with the outgoing E350. But as well as the V-6 performs, it maintains a respectful distance from the E550 with its powerful 402-hp V-8, which remains in the lineup for 2015 in coupe and cabriolet (but not sedan) form.
